Overview

Gamification is the core differentiator that sets garden.gg apart from every other garden tracking tool. While other apps treat gardening as data entry, garden.gg turns your daily garden activities into a rewarding progression system. Every watering, harvest, and photo earns experience points, unlocks achievements, and moves you up the leaderboard.

This is not gamification bolted on as an afterthought. The system is designed from the ground up to reward the behaviors that make gardens successful: consistency, observation, documentation, and experimentation.

The XP System

Experience Points (XP) are the foundation of garden.gg’s gamification. Every meaningful action you take in the app earns XP, which accumulates toward your level.

How XP Stacks

Photo XP is a bonus that stacks on top of event XP. For example:

  • Logging a harvest: 15 XP
  • Logging a harvest with a photo: 15 + 20 = 35 XP
  • Logging a harvest with a photo and it completes a badge: 15 + 20 + badge XP

Batch events earn XP for each individual event created. Watering 4 plots in a batch earns 4 x 5 = 20 XP.

XP Display

Your current XP, level progress, and XP earned today are displayed on:

  • The dashboard header
  • Your profile page
  • The leaderboard
  • Event confirmation modals (showing the XP you just earned)

Levels

Levels give you a sense of long-term progression. As you accumulate XP, you advance through 12 levels, each with a unique title that reflects your growing expertise.

How Long Does It Take?

The time to reach each level depends on how actively you garden and log events. Here are some rough estimates for a typical gardener with a few raised beds:

  • Level 3 (Seedling): 1-2 weeks of daily logging
  • Level 5 (Green Thumb): About a month of consistent use
  • Level 8 (Botanist): A full growing season of active tracking
  • Level 10 (Garden Elder): Two to three active seasons
  • Level 12 (Garden Sage): Three to five active seasons, or one very active season with a large garden

These are estimates. A gardener with 20 plots who logs every event with photos will progress much faster than someone with a single container.

Level-Up Rewards

When you reach a new level, you receive:

  • A congratulations notification with your new title
  • Your level badge updates on your profile
  • A level-up entry in your activity feed (visible to followers if your profile is public)
  • Access to the next level’s title as your display rank

Daily Streaks

Streaks reward the single most valuable behavior in gardening: showing up every day. Maintaining a daily streak means logging at least one event per calendar day (in your local time zone).

How Streaks Work

  • Starting a streak: Log any event on any day. Your streak begins at 1.
  • Maintaining a streak: Log at least one event the next calendar day. Your streak increments by 1.
  • Breaking a streak: If a calendar day passes with no events logged, your streak resets to 0.
  • Current streak: Displayed prominently on your dashboard with a flame icon.

Streak Milestones

Reaching streak milestones earns bonus XP:

MilestoneDaysBonus XPCumulative Streak XP
Week One75085 (35 daily + 50 bonus)
Monthly30200350 (150 daily + 200 bonus)
Centurion1001,0001,750 (500 daily + 1,250 bonus)
Bicentennial2002,0004,750
Year-Round3655,00012,575

Streak milestones also unlock specific badges (see the Badges section below).

Streak Freezes

Life happens. Sometimes you cannot get to your garden or open the app. Streak freezes protect your streak on days you miss:

  • Sprout plan (free): 1 streak freeze per month
  • Bloom plan: 3 streak freezes per month
  • Harvest plan: 3 streak freezes per month

Streak freezes are applied automatically when a day ends without a logged event, as long as you have freezes available. They are consumed in order and replenish on the first of each month.

You can also manually activate a streak freeze in advance if you know you will be away. Go to Settings > Streaks > Freeze and select the date(s) to freeze.

Streak Tips

  • Log watering: Even on days when you do not do much gardening, you probably watered something. A 5-second quick-log watering event keeps your streak alive.
  • Use reminders: Enable the “streak at risk” push notification to get a reminder before midnight if you have not logged an event.
  • Off-season strategies: In winter, log indoor activities like seed inventory management, garden planning notes, or soil test results to maintain your streak.

Hidden Badges

Some badges are not listed in the achievement catalog. These hidden badges reward exploration and unusual accomplishments. You will not know about them until you unlock them. Hints:

  • Try logging events at unusual times
  • Explore every feature in the app
  • Pay attention to seasonal events
  • Look for patterns in your own data

We will not spoil them here, but there are currently 5 hidden badges waiting to be discovered.

Badge Display

Earned badges appear on your profile and in your badge collection. You can:

  • Pin badges: Choose up to 3 badges to display prominently on your profile
  • Share badges: Share badge unlock moments to social media
  • View badge details: See when you earned each badge and the exact criteria

Leaderboards

Leaderboards add a competitive element for gardeners who enjoy friendly competition.

Leaderboard Types

  • Weekly: Resets every Monday. Rewards consistent effort within a single week.
  • Monthly: Resets on the first of each month. Rewards sustained activity over a longer period.
  • All-Time: Never resets. The cumulative ranking of all garden.gg users.

What Leaderboards Measure

Leaderboards rank users by total XP earned within the time period. This means all activities contribute equally based on their XP value, and no single activity type dominates.

Privacy Controls

Leaderboards are entirely opt-in. By default, you are not visible on any leaderboard. To participate:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Leaderboards
  2. Toggle on the leaderboards you want to appear on
  3. Choose your display name (username, first name, or custom alias)

You can opt out at any time. When you opt out, your data is immediately removed from all leaderboards.

Fair Play

garden.gg has automated systems to detect anomalous activity patterns. Logging hundreds of events per day or other patterns inconsistent with actual gardening may result in leaderboard exclusion. The goal is to reward real gardening, not data entry speed.

Public Profiles

Your public profile showcases your gardening journey to other users.

What is Displayed

  • Level and title: Your current level badge and title (e.g., “Level 7 Horticulturist”)
  • Pinned badges: Up to 3 badges you choose to highlight
  • Current streak: Your active streak count (if you choose to display it)
  • Gardens: Links to your public gardens (private gardens are never shown)
  • Stats: Total plants, total harvests, member since date

Profile Privacy

You control exactly what appears on your public profile:

  • Fully public: Level, badges, streak, gardens, stats
  • Badges only: Just your level and pinned badges
  • Private: No public profile (default for new accounts)

Adjust these settings at Settings > Privacy > Profile.

Gamification Strategy

Here are strategies for maximizing your progression:

For XP Optimization

  • Always add photos: The 20 XP bonus per photo is the single largest modifier. A harvest event with a photo earns 35 XP versus 15 without.
  • Log individual plants: Watering three tomato plants individually earns 15 XP; logging a single watering event for the plot earns 5 XP. When you have time, log at the plant level.
  • Use all event types: Do not just log watering. Pruning, training, weeding, and mulching all earn XP and contribute to badge progress.

For Streak Building

  • Set a daily reminder: The most common reason people break streaks is simply forgetting. A notification at your usual garden time prevents this.
  • Keep a freeze in reserve: Do not use your streak freezes casually early in the month. Save at least one for emergencies.
  • Log something small: A quick watering note takes 5 seconds and preserves your streak. You do not need to do a thorough logging session every day.

For Badge Hunting

  • Check your badge progress: Visit the badge collection regularly to see which badges you are close to earning. A few targeted actions might push you over the threshold.
  • Explore features: Many badges reward trying different parts of the app. Use plant ID, check analytics, view other gardens.
  • Go for hidden badges: If you have earned all visible badges, experiment with unusual logging patterns and feature combinations.
