The four shots that make identification accurate

Most bad identifications are bad photographs. Take these four and the hit rate changes:

  1. The leaf, filling the frame. Shape, margin, and vein pattern carry most of the diagnostic information. Get close enough that the leaf occupies the whole shot.
  2. The whole plant. Habit matters. A vine, a rosette, and a shrub with identical leaves are different species, and the close-up cannot tell them apart.
  3. Flowers or fruit if present. These are the most distinctive structures a plant has. A flowering photo is worth three leaf photos.
  4. The underside of a leaf. Hair, colour, and vein prominence on the underside separate several look-alike pairs that are indistinguishable from above.

Shoot in daylight without flash. Flash flattens exactly the texture the model reads.

When the AI gets it wrong

Photo identification is genuinely good and it is not reliable enough to eat on. The failure modes are consistent and worth knowing.

Seedlings. Nearly every plant looks like every other plant at the cotyledon stage, because the first leaves are seed leaves and carry almost no species information. Wait for true leaves. This is the single most common wrong answer.

Cultivars within a species. Identifiers are trained to species level. Asking which tomato variety you are looking at is asking a question the model cannot answer from a leaf, and it will still return something confident. If variety matters, scan the seed packet instead.

Look-alike pairs with different consequences. Wild carrot and poison hemlock. Wild garlic and lily of the valley. Edible and toxic lookalikes are exactly where a confident wrong answer costs the most, and exactly where the visual differences are subtle.

Damaged or stressed foliage. A leaf with disease, insect damage, or nutrient burn no longer looks like the training data. Identification accuracy drops on the plants you most want identified.

Regional variation. A species grown in a different climate can present differently enough to shift the answer.

The rule that follows from all of this: treat the identification as a strong hypothesis, not a fact. Check the confidence score, cross-check the scientific name against a second source, and never eat anything on the strength of a photo ID alone. If the plant is sick rather than unknown, diagnosis is a different problem and wants different photos.
