That’s the state of plant apps in 2026. Identification is basically free now; every app has it, and your phone camera can ID most plants for free. Diagnosis is where the paywalls moved. Which is exactly backwards, because diagnosis is the feature you need when something is actually dying.

How to diagnose a plant problem from a photo

Whichever app you use, the photo quality and the context you provide determine whether you get a real answer or a shrug. Here’s the process that works:

  1. Photograph the symptom up close. Fill the frame with the affected leaf or stem. Natural daylight, no harsh shadows. A blurry photo of the whole plant from four feet away diagnoses nothing.
  2. Take a second shot of the whole plant. Distribution matters — lower leaves only, one side only, new growth only. These patterns point to different causes, and the app (or the human reading your community post) needs to see them.
  3. Check both sides of the leaf. Spider mites, whiteflies, and many fungal issues show up on the underside first. If you see anything moving, get a photo of it.
