Per-container amendments
Scaled linearly to your container size. Apply at transplant or as side-dress per the notes on each line.
- Balanced organic fertilizer (4-4-4 / 5-5-5) Mix in at planting; side-dress at 4 inches and again 3-4 weeks later.2–4 tbsp
- Garden lime Only if base mix tests below pH 6.5 — helps suppress club root.1–2 tbsp
- Kelp meal Trace minerals for sustained leaf production.1–2 tbsp
Growing notes
- Target neutral soil (6.0-7.5) — slightly alkaline side helps suppress club root.
- Side-dress at ~4 inches tall: small handful balanced N source per plant.
- Aim for 1 inch of water per week; consistent moisture gives the best flavor.
- Rotate brassicas — avoid same spot for 4 years to limit soilborne disease.
- Flavor sweetens after the first frost; harvest outer leaves and let center keep producing.
- Watch for cabbage worms and aphids; row cover at transplant is effective.
